In the world of private asset management these companies are the god fathers of them all.  It is crazy to think that the total assets under management of the world’s largest 500 managers grew to US$ 81.2 trillion in 2016, representing a rise of 5.8% on the previous year.

So exactly do they match up?

1.North America leading the way with $44 trillion dollars in assets.

2. Europe and including UK fell 3.3% to $25 Trillion dollars

3. The Japanese asset manager absolutely crushed the markets and grew a whopping 3.1% to $4 trillion.

4. Asian managers and rest of the world were down by 4% to $3.6 trillion.

The 45 billionaires in the world who made their fortune managing hedge funds apparently struggled in the last year to keep up with the rising U.S. stock market and billionaires in other industries, but they remain huge players in financial markets still making or worth billions might I add.

Top of this list is the  always impressive man that took the bank of England down, George Soros who is the world’s richest hedge fund billionaire with an estimated net worth of $25.2 billion.

James Simons, the quantitative trading (Quantitative trading is an extremely sophisticated area of quant finance. It can take a significant amount of time to gain the necessary knowledge to pass an interview or construct your own trading strategies) genius behind Renaissance Technologies, retired from his hedge fund firm in 2010, but he still plays a role at Renaissance and continues to benefit from its strong performance. James Simons’ estimated net worth has reached $18 billion.

Ray Dalio is the founder of the world’s biggest hedge fund firm, Bridgewater Associates, which manages $160 billion.

Steve Cohen is one of the most successful hedge fund managers ever and has a net worth of $13 billion.

David Tepper has been steadily returning money to client investors of his Appaloosa Management. The hedge fund firm now manages some $17 billion

John Paulson remains one of the hedge fund world’s richest billionaires, with $7.9 billion
